About Marshall Umpleby

Marshall UmplebyMarshall Umpleby grew up in Englewood, New Jersey and attended Wesleyan University where he majored in English, played football, baseball and squash, and wrote sports stories for the college newspaper.

Umpleby spent over four years in the Navy as an aircraft carrier jet pilot aboard the USS Kearsarge which deployed to the western Pacific. He retired from the Naval Reserve with the rank of Commander.

Umpleby taught high school English and journalism for 25 years in San Mateo, California. He earned a masters degree from Stanford and teaching credentials from San Francisco State University, Hayward State University, and Stanford. He ended his career in education as a high school principal In Millbrae, California.

He enjoys writing short stories, essays and poetry, watching movies and plays, and indulging his passion for baseball. He has been a lifetime Dodger fan and ardent follower of Stanford baseball. The publication of his historical World War II novel On Falcon’s Wings is the realization of a lifelong dream.

Umpleby and his wife live in Ashland, Oregon, the home of Southern Oregon University and the renown Oregon Shakespeare Festival. His two adult daughters live in California.
